  • Scope and Content
Narelle Phipps recounts her upbringing in Drummoyne, the birth of her daughter and son, and moving to Eastwood. She described her reaction to some of her son’s behaviours as a little boy, prompting her to wonder if he was gay, her response to those innate questions; her reaction to Neil attending Mardi Gras; emotional collapse on learning he was gay; the importance of family and acceptance of her son's identity.

Phipps discusses her discovery and involvement in Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), the work and role of PFLAG, participating in Mardi Gras, invitation to address groups about PFLAG work, submissions by PFLAG, conferences held in Wagga Wagga, Bathurst and Sydney, PFLAG kits and meetings, participation in Fair Day, and the value of recognition of PFLAG by the Department of Education.

Phipps reflects on the work and achievements of PFLAG towards the understanding of homosexuality and success of the same sex vote, the consolidation of the archives and future of the organisation. She discusses her interview for New Idea, the response of her mother-in-law; and her son's attitude to his parents work in PFLAG.
