  • Scope and Content
Fiona Kelly McGregor recounts her upbringing in a conservative Catholic
family in Sydney, New South Wales. She talks about her work as a fiction writer and essayist, which often provide social and political commentary on the art, performance, and queer dance party scenes.

McGregor describes the emergence of the queer women and trans performance scene in Sydney over the last three decades, the influence of sex-positive events like Gurlesque on the politics of the queer feminist community, and the loss of these provocative queer spaces in more recent times as a result of gentrification, over-policing, and tightening entertainment laws. She talks candidly about her relationship to drugs, her experiences as a sex worker, and about having Hepatitis C.

McGregor describes notable performances in her performance art career and details the circumstances surrounding the writing of each of her books. She also speaks about the conservative nature of the Australian literary scene and how she feels being pigeon-holed as a controversial queer writer has negatively impacted on her career.
