  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Paul Mezulianik (1921-2019) was born in Vienna, Austria, the only child of Rudolf and Gisela Mezulianik. Paul’s mother was Jewish and Paul was one of around 2,000 mostly Jewish men deported from England on HMT Dunera, after being classed as an enemy alien during the Second World War. Mezulianik had been living in the UK as an Austrian refugee since May 1939, working on a farm in Yorkshire.

In Australia, Mezulianik was held at the Hay Internment and Prisoner of War Camp from September 1940 until May 1941. While there, he lived in Camp 8, Hut 20. He was then moved to Tatura internment camp in Victoria, where he remained until July the following year. He returned to Britain on the TSS Themistocles on 18 July 1942.
