  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Geoffrey Lawrence Young was born at Katoomba, on 4 January 1910. He went to Tudor House, Moss Vale, then to Geelong Grammar School. He entered Emmanuel College, Cambridge, to study medicine. He joined the Cambridge University Air Squadron. Geoffrey completed his medical course at St Bartholomew’s in 1937. While at Cambridge he met Gladys Irene Kennan Petter. In 1939 they decided to return to Australia. Geoffrey secured passage on the S.S. Largs Bay as the Medical Officer. In August 1940, Geoffrey joined the Royal Australian Air Force and was posted to New Guinea. Late in 1943, Geoffrey approached the Hospitals Commission of NSW with a proposal to commence a flying doctor service in the New South Wales outback, based at Forbes. For eight years, Geoffrey flew and serviced his own planes conducting weekly clinics in twelve communities, and flying out critical cases for treatment at the nearest District Hospital. In 1952 the Young family moved back to Sydney, Geoffrey secured a position as Consultant Anaesthetist at Ryde Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital. He became Senior Anaesthetist, holding this position until 1981. Geoffrey and Irene celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1985. Died 25 September 1993, Waitara, NSW, aged 83.
