  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Gladys Irene Kennan Young (née Petter) and known as Irene, was born in England on 6 April 1910 and emigrated to Australia in 1940. She was a leader of Christian women’s organisations from the 1950s to the 1980s. She was a long-term council member of the Crusader Union of New South Wales and a leading member of the Inter-Varsity Fellowship of Evangelical Unions from its foundation in England in 1928. She was active in working with overseas students from the early 1950s until the 1980s. In recognition of her work with overseas students she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1993. She married Geoffrey Lawrence Young in 1935. They had five children and ten grandchildren. She died at Normanhurst, NSW, on 22 September 1996.
