Henry Aloysius Hanke was born in Sydney on 14 June 1901. He studied at the J. S. Watkins Art School in Sydney and, in 1936, was the first artist to win the Archibald Prize for a self-portrait. He was an official war artist during WWII. He died on 29 September 1989. - Collection historyVendor advised the work came from a private collection in Sydney. It was previously auctioned by Theodore Bruce Auctioneers and Valuers as Lot 30 from The Laurie Seaman Collection on 20 October 2019.
- Scope and ContentOil on linen painting of Hunter Street from the corner of Elizabeth Street, Sydney, showing Qantas House, several historic rowhouses with storefronts, cars and persons walking. Models of automobiles and fashion as worn by persons in painting depict a late 1950s to mid-1960s timeframe.
