  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Ethel Jackson Morris (1891-1985) was a Victorian born Australian illustrator. Inspired by artists such as Ida Rentoul Outhwaite and Edmund Dulac, she studied painting and drawing at the National Gallery Art School from 1910 until 1920. Her first book, ‘All Among the Fairies’, was published in 1909. She contributed to Dame Nellie Melba’s ‘Melba's gift book of Australian art and literature’ in 1915 and published ‘The White Butterfly’ in 1921. She married Captain John Overton in 1930 and died in Sydney in 1985.

    Three small sketchbooks containing pencil drawings and one watercolour. The drawings are predominantly character sketches, anonymous portraits and what appears to be costume designs. Combined the sketchbooks contain approximately 131 drawings.
