  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Vicars (1820-1894) migrated to Australia from Scotland, 1863. He moved to Sydney and managed Thomas Barker's tweed mill in Sussex Street, Sydney, 1871-73, and bought the company in 1873. He won many first prizes for tweeds and woollens at colonial and international exhibitions in the 1870s and 1880s. He retired in 1887 and handed the business to his sons.

    Sir John Vicars (1957-1936), Sir William Vicars (1859-1940) and Robert Vicars (1867-1962) were sons of John Vicars, who took over the management of John Vicars & Co. and moved the business to a larger site at Marrickville, New South Wales, 1893. They later acquired Sydney Woollen Mills Ltd at Parramatta, New South Wales.

    The brothers were active patriots during World War I and chaired various associations including, State Wool Committee, British Australian Wool Realisation Association Ltd, State Repatriation Board etc.

    James Vicars (1865-1944) was born in Rockhampton, Queensland and also a son of John Vicars. He was an architect and engineer and completed work on the Vicars factory buildings and renovations.

    John Maxwel Vicars (1904-1969) is the son of Robert Vicars (1867-1962) and Violet Halliday Vicars (nee Little).
