  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    David Henry Souter (1862-1935) was born in Aberdeen, Scotland and settled in Sydney in 1887. He was a popular cartoonist, who contributed at least one cartoon a week to The Bulletin over a forty-year period. His varied creative output included paintings, posters, bookplates and book illustrations (for authors including Ethel Turner). Souter also wrote poetry, librettos, produced plays for Sydney's Repertory Theatre and served as editor of Art and Architecture. He was actively involved in the Royal Art Society of New South Wales and the breakaway Society of Artists, with figures such as Julian Ashton and Norman Lindsay.

  • Scope and Content
    Typed manuscript of D. H. Souter's unpublished novel, 'Queer Birds'. The manuscript is 216 leaves long and has been annotated by the author. The story is set in 1890s Sydney and follows the lives of four struggling artists and singers.
