  • Scope and Content
A digitised photocopy of ‘The Far West & Journeyings in the Backblocks’, a hand-written memoir by Rev. George A. Carver recording his experiences while serving as an Anglican minister in the Wilcannia region in New South Wales, from 1887 to 1888.

The memoir consists of a detailed account of Wilcannia, and of journeys Rev. Carver undertook on horseback to perform his ministerial activities in surrounding towns and at outlying stations (such as Noonthorungie, Milparinka, Tibooburra, Mount Browne, Murtee, Mount Murchison, Momba, Tongo, Monolon, Yancannia, Morden, Wonnaminta, Mootwingee, Gnalta).

Rev. Carver wrote the memoir, consisting of 51 pages and six drawings, after he returned from Wilcannia. It is dated 'Bodalla, N.S.W. July 1888' and also includes a reference to an event that took place in 1889.

The photocopy, which has been digitised, is the only extant version of the memoir as the original is assumed to be lost. It is accompanied by a typescript transcript which has been provided by Rev. Carver’s great-granddaughter.
