  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Hurstville and District Patriotic and War Fund was established on 29 June 1940. It was a sub-branch of the Australian Comfort Fund, first established during World War II. The Funds aimed to raise money to provide comfort packages and assistance for local residents who had enlisted for war service. Support was also provided to their dependents in distressed circumstances. A call for the formation of ladies’ auxiliaries soon followed, and along with others, the Peakhurst Ladies’ Auxiliary was established in August 1940. Their fundraising activities included door-to-door and street collecting, the sale of patriotic buttons and organising charity events. The ladies’ auxiliaries were also responsible for sorting and packing the comfort packages that were sent out. The final meeting of the Peakhurst Ladies’ Auxiliary was held on 10 December 1945.

Evelyn Olds (nee Bonner) was Secretary of the Peakhurst Ladies’ Auxiliary during its five years existence. Her husband, Oliver Arnold Olds, was Mayor of Hurstville from 1945-1948.
