  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The Hon. Sir Asher Joel was born at 1912 in Stanmore, NSW. He began his career as a messenger boy on the Daily Telegraph at the age of 14, later becoming a copy boy on the editorial staff. He later became a cadet and junior reporter and the Government Roundsman on the Labor Daily, before moving into the fields of public relations, commerce and publishing.
    Sir Asher Joel was a pioneer in the publicist and media industry with his company, Asher Joel Media Group. He served with the AIF and the RAN during World War II. He was a member of the Legislative Council of NSW, 1957-1978. He was a prominent member of the Jewish community and was President of the ANZAC Memorial and Forest Appeal. This memorial, near Gaza in Israel, was dedicated on 24 April 1968.
    Sir Asher Joel was awarded an O.B.E. in 1956. He was created a Knight Bachelor in 1971 and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1974. Sir Asher Joel died in 1998.
