    John Bede Polding was born in Liverpool, England in 1794. He was ordained a priest in 1819 and consecrated a bishop in 1835. He arrived in Sydney in the same year becoming the first Roman Catholic bishop in Australia. In 1842 he was appointed the first Archbishop of Sydney. Until his death in 1877 he worked tirelessly to establish primary and secondary schools, Sydney University’s St John’s College, the Cathedral of St Mary's (twice gutted by fire), a seminary for priestly training, a Catholic hospital and 82 parish churches throughout the colony.
