  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Bartram’s sandpiper appeared as plate 77 in Birds of Australia. Supplement / by John Gould (London : J. Gould, 1869). The caption in the published version is 'Actiturus Bartramius', with 'J. Gould & H.C. Richter del & lith'. The plate shows only one standing sandpiper in the foreground, and one sandpiper in the background.

The inscription on the verso of this lithograph proof is repeated near verbatim in the published version. The specimen of the bird on which Gould based his drawing is the same specimen as that identified as 'Upland Sandpiper (Bartramia longicauda)' held by the Australian Museum.

  • Collection history
Purchased by vendor from a London art dealer in approximately 2017-2018. The print is probably from the descendants of Frederic Du Cane Godman, who purchased a large number of items from the Gould estate on Gould's death, either directly or through Sotheran (information supplied by vendor)
  • Scope and Content
Hand-coloured lithograph plate (before letters) depicting two sandpipers in the foreground, one standing looking to the left, the other crouched; and four birds in the background. The image documents the only known occurrence in Australia of the vagrant bird Bartram's sandpiper (now Bartramia longicauda), also known as Upland sandpiper or previously as Upland plover.

On the verso is a faint pencil sketch of a bird made at an unknown date.

Ink inscription, verso, top left, 'The specimen from which the drawing on the other side was taken was shot by an old sportsman during the snipe season of October 1848 near the water reservoir in the vicinity of Sydney N.S.W. On examination it proved to be a male. The innard(?) was filled with aquatic insects. Eye: yellow; legs: green; yellow under bill yellow. Return spec. to Sydney museum. 1861'
It is possible the inscription is by Richter or, more likely, Edwin Charles Prince, John Gould's secretary (information supplied by vendor)
