  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Dave Sands (1926-1952) was a Dunghutti man who was born David Ritchie at Burnt Bridge Mission near Kempsey on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. Alongside five of his brothers he pursued boxing and became the most successful of the siblings.

    Dave Sands won both the Australian middleweight and light-heavyweight titles in 1946 and in 1949 won the British Empire middleweight title. In 1950 he won the Australian heavyweight title and the following year narrowly missed the opportunity to fight Sugar Ray Robinson for the World middleweight title. Sands fought 100 professional fights, with 97 wins, 52 by knockout. He died on 11th August 1952 when a truck he was in overturned at roadworks near Dungog, New South Wales. He is buried in Sandgate Cemetery, near Newcastle, New South Wales.
