Marian Ellis Rowan (1848-1922) was an artist, naturalist and explorer born in Melbourne, Victoria. Her grandfather, John Cotton, wrote and illustrated two books on English birds. Rowan found and painted wildflowers, birds, insects and butterflies of many countries, many which were classified and named by the government botanist Sir Ferdinand Mueller.

Between 1879 and 1893, Rowan exhibited her work in international exhibitions in Australia, India, England, Europe and the United States of America and was awarded 10 gold medals, 15 silver and 4 bronze awards. She was awarded the highest honours at Melbourne's Centennial International Exhibition, 1888. In 1916-18, she visited Papua and New Guinea twice, searching and illustrating many unclassified flowers and endangered birds.
