  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Nessie Law and Dora Leslie were stage performers in Sydney from childhood. Nessie was first noted in 1896 as one of the 'chief' performers when dance teacher Thomas Walker held a juvenile concert of his pupils at the Standard Theatre, Castlereagh Street. She frequently featured at children’s and charity events and carnivals as a fancy bicyclist. In November 1905, Dora Leslie performed at the Juvenile Concert of her dance teacher Ethel Clifford, who, in December, advertised Dora among those pupils who had risen to success on the stage. Nessie seems to have later adopted the surname 'Leslie' when she teamed up with Dora as 'The Leslies'.
