  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

It is believed that modern Freemasonry developed out of stonemasons' guilds in 17th century England and is one of the world’s oldest and largest fraternal societies. Although the first official Lodge was only formed in Australia in 1820, Freemasons had been in Australia since the arrival of Freemason Sir Joseph Banks in 1770.

Freemasons in Australia support charity and community service and believe it provides a code for living based on moral and ethical standards.

Thomas Raphael Powell (1913-1985) was a member of the freemasons from 1942 to 1944. He lived in Lindfield, Sydney, and worked as a haulage contractor. In 1944 he married Joyce Robinson.
