  • Scope and Content
In the first of four interviews, Dr Gene Sherman begins the story of her life and career by recalling her early years in Johannesburg, South Africa set against the background of the nation's history and apartheid era. She speaks in detail about her parents, brother, and close-knit extended family and her upbringing, which she describes as being socially, politically and culturally aware and recalls her family's move to Australia in 1964 and return to Johannesburg a year later after becoming disillusioned with Australian society and being vilified for seemingly representing apartheid South Africa.
Dr Sherman also discusses the suicide of her mother, her marriage to Brian Sherman, losing their first child, the births of their son, Emile and daughter, Odine and her studies, including her PhD on Andre Gide through the Sorbonne in Paris, and the University of Sydney.
