David Ireland was born in 1927 in Lakemba in south-western Sydney, New South Wales. He is the author of ten novels, three of which have won the Miles Franklin Literary Award: 'The Unknown Industrial Prisoner', 'The Glass Canoe' and 'A Woman of the Future'. Ireland was made a member of the Order of Australia in 1981. In 1985 he received the Australian Literature Society Gold Medal for his novel Archimedes and the Seagull. In 2013 he was presented with a NSW Premier's Literary Awards 'Special Award' which is presented ‘under exceptional circumstances ... either for an Australian literary work that is not readily covered by existing awards categories or in recognition of an Australian writer’s achievements generally’.
