    The inscription on verso of the original frame indicates that this work may have been held in a private collection of John Harvey Looney (d. 2016) prior to purchase by the Library from Ancanthe.

    Signed "H Boughton 05" lower right corner, with clippings "Grace Bros Sydney, Picture Framers and Mount Cutters, The Winton Graded Art Panels in six tints" on verso.
    Inscription on verso of original frame reads:
    "I have seen in a newspaper years ago, that a copy of the same as this one and by the same artist sold for $[?],000 at auction! John Looney.
    Photograph stamps, paint and...H. Boughton...stamps on the dress are from Queensland and N.S.W. as each stamp of Australia had their own stamps before Federation.

  • Attributions / conjectures

    It is not known whether H Boughton was the photographer as well as the collagist or whether the dress follows the outlines of the original photograph.
