  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Maude Shipp (1895-1964), was a vaudeville performer who appeared in numerous productions with a series of companies around New South Wales and interstate during World War I and into the 1920s and 30s. One reviewer, writing in 1933, wrote that she was ‘classed as Australia’s foremost comedy performer.’ By the late 1930s, she had moved into radio and as ‘Auntie Maude’ had regular spots with 2UE and 2KY while maintaining a schedule of live performances. During World War II, she lent her services to fundraising and morale-boosting variety shows and talent quests.

  • Collection history
Bequeathed by Maude Shipp to Lottie Newman, a widow who had been part of the well-established vaudevillian team – Val and Lottie Newman. Lottie bequeathed the scrapbook to her friend, the donor’s mother who lived in the same block of flats. From her it passed to the donor Stephen Knight.
  • Scope and Content
Scrapbook created by Maude Shipp between 1907 and 1960, consisting of 122 pages, including photographs and articles from newspapers as well as programs and handbills relating to local theatrical productions and performers as well as visiting international stars. Among their number are Nellie Stewart, Nellie Melba, Bert Bailey, Oscar Asche, Lilian Tree, and Maude Shipp herself. There are also over a dozen of obituaries of theatrical figures, notably a substantial coverage of J. C. Williamson in 1913 and the penultimate page contains handwriting which appears to be a contents or index page.
