Dancer Irene Vera Young (1895-1975) was born in Bowral, NSW, the daughter of pastoralist Arthur Edward Hanslow Carter. She received a convent school education in Wagga Wagga, NSW, and married Sydney solicitor Charles Throsby Young in 1914. After studying dance in New York and Germany, Young returned to Sydney in 1932 and taught at France Sully’s ballet school and Vere Mathews’ School of Exercise. In 1933 Young opened her own dance school, the ‘School of German Dance and Body Culture’. In 1936 Irene Vera Young won a medal at the Olympia International Dance Competition in Berlin. In 1941 Young established the Australian Association of Creative Dance alongside Austrian dancer Gertrud Bodenwieser.

Young’s daughter, Barbara Throsby Young (1915-2020) also became a dancer and dance teacher.

‘Charman’ or J or F Bardsley was a former stagehand and set builder at the Playbox Theatre whose duties at Young’s George Street premises included cleaning the dance studio.
