  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Thomas George Valentine Blakey was born in Cobar, New South Wales in 1884 and died in Sydney in 1942. He lived in Paddington, Sydney and in 1911 was declared bankrupt. In 1920 he applied for a mining lease in Roebourne, Western Australia and three years later travelled to China, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

  • Scope and Content
    Thomas Blakey's handwritten Letts's No. 45 Indian and Colonial Rough Diary 1923 kept while working with Foochow Electrical Company, Foochow (Fuzhou Shi), China, the Anglo Chinese Commercial Co. Ltd and the Isabella Sugar Company in the Southern Philippines.
    The diary document employment and living conditions, work projects, finances and Blakey's social life. Blakey also writes about Chinese society and politics including a reference to ‘5000 troops leaving Foochow for Canton overland march with full war kit guns etc' on 28 January 1923.
