  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Alfred William Eustace was a landscape painter, taxidermist, and shepherd. Eustace was born in England in 1820 and came to Australia with his wife and children in 1851. He lived in Chiltern, Victoria, where he initially worked as a shepherd on the El Dorado and Ullina squatting runs at Black Dog Creek

While Eustace’ life and paintings are predominantly based in Victoria, his work was known internationally at the time. Adopting the Australian bush as his central theme, he became known as the ‘Bush Artist’. He was renowned for his works on the leaves of red and white box eucalyptus trees and painted scenes of historically important events in north-eastern Victoria

During the 1850s and 1860s Eustace worked as a house decorator and sign writer at Albury, New South Wales and therefore there is some possibility that this painting depicts a location in New South Wales.
