Ruth Godden (1907-1990) is the daughter of Charles Godden, an Anglican priest and missionary in the New Hebrides (Vanuatu). She graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Science and became a science high school teacher. She graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, 1944 and practised medicine in Nimbin in the 1950s, then Murrurundi, New South Wales, until her retirement around 1980.

Jean Cameron Bryson met Ruth Godden during her studies at University of Sydney and became close friends for life, with a strong shared interest in the English language and literature.

The topics include details of life in New Hebrides, Nimbin and Murrurundi, New South Wales as a rural doctor. Godden provides personal insight of moving to rural New South Wales from Sydney. Her poems relate to her travels, rural life experiences and work as a doctor.
