    Roderick Shaw (1915-1992) was an artist, designer and printer born in Drummoyne, New South Wales. Shaw studied art at East Sydney Technical College, and during World War II worked at the Commonwealth Aircraft factory painting camouflage with William Dobell and Joshua Smith.

    Camoufleurs were employees of the Department of Home Security, attached to the RAAF during World War 2. Their job was to disguise aeroplanes and other equipment to avoid their detection by the enemy.

  • Scope and Content
    Collection of letters, diaries, photographs and Shaw family papers compiled by Roderick and Christine Shaw, 1878-2003. Includes diaries and letters written by Roderick Shaw to his wife, Frances, documenting his work painting camouflage on military equipment for the the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II, 1942-44. Also included in the collection are two oral history interviews with Shaw's fellow 'Camoufleurs', Clem Seale and Stewart McCrae, 1994.
