  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Frederick Rose (1915-1991) was born in Croydon, London. He studied geology and anthropology and had a particular interest in Australian Aboriginals. In 1937 he travelled to Australia and was posted to the Groote Eyland region to work for the Meteorological Office. Rose conducted ethnographical research in northern and central Australia, some of it during his employment with the Meteorological Office. He published several books about Aboriginal culture including Australia Revisited: The Aborigine Story from Stone Age to Space Age (1968) and The Traditional Mode of Production of the Australian Aborigines (1987). A member of the Communist party, Rose was under surveillance by ASIO and was accused of involvement in a Soviet espionage ring. In 1956 with his wife and children he emigrated to the German Democratic Republic, where he worked as a professor of social anthropology.
While the correspondence on offer is not related directly to Rose’s anthropological work, it would provide an important insight into the personal life of a once controversial figure living and working in the German Democratic Republic before German reunification. The correspondence dates from 1954, just before Rose moved to the GDR with his family and 1989, just before he died.
