  • Scope and Content
Paul Gleeson reflects on his careers in land management industries and fire management in the rural fire service, with particular reference to his role as a fire spotter. Gleeson discusses the relationship between the unseasonable fires and drought, with particular reference to the New South Wales fires in August 2018. He recounts the biggest changes he had witnessed in fire fighting and fire management in his career, the impact of social media on bush fire management and community safety, misconceptions about bush fires, fire management on the ground and in the air during a fire, the role of a rural fire fighter and his role as Group Captain in the New South Wales Rural Fire Service.

Based on his years of experience, Gleeson provides an in depth explanation on why the National Parks and Australian bush is becoming more susceptible to fire during drought. He also explains and provides an opinion about the Aboriginal fire management systems and approach. Gleeson talks about the collaboration between local Aboriginal communities and the Rural Fire Services, and details a recent Indigenous fire workshop conducted on Country with help from the Aboriginal people of Cape York, Queensland.
