Debroah Bird Rose was an anthropologist and ethnographer, with a focus on social and ecological justice based on Australian Aboriginal peoples fieldwork she researched since the 1980s. Rose drew upon anthropology, history, philosophy, cultural, religious and animal studies to build ethnographic and ecological knowledge.

Rose's doctoral work explored how an Aboriginal people group answered fundamental existential questions, which she published as 'Dingo makes us human: Life and land in an Australian Aboriginal culture' (1992), which won the Stanner Prize for work on Aboriginal issues. Rose has also won the Jessie Litchfield Award for Literature, 'Hidden histories' (1991), and was shortlisted for the NSW Premier's Awards, 'Reports from a wild country: Ethics for decolonisation' (2004).

Rose worked as a consultant anthropologist for various bodies, including the Aboriginal Land Commissioner, Northern Land Council, Central Land Council, NSW Parks and Wildlife Service and the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority; and was a founding member of the Kangaloon Group for Creative Ecologies.

Rose edited the ecological humanities section of the 'Australian humanities review' and the online journal, 'Environmental humanities' with Thom van Dooren.
