    The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG) was a Church of England missionary organisation founded in 1701 which sent Anglican clergymen and religious literature to the British colonies in the 18th and 19th centuries.

    The Rev. William Stack (1810-1871) was born in Ireland andemigrated to Australia with his wife in 1837. In1838 he took up an appointment in the West Maitland parish, where he was in pastoral charge of all Anglican clergy in the Upper Hunter. He served at Maitland for nine years before being transferred to St Peter’s Campbelltown in 1847and St. Mary’s Balmain in 1855. He was the author of several pamphlets on various questions relating to the Church of England in Australia.

    From the collection of Kenneth Athol Webster (1906-1967), a New Zealand-born dealer and collector in manuscripts, books, paintings and ethnographic artefacts relating to the Pacific.
  • Scope and Content
    Uncompleted three page printed questionnaire issued by the Diocese of Australia on behalf of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, London, to Reverend William Stack, West Maitland and District, New South Wales in 1845.
    Information is sought relating to parish size, population, financial income, contributions and clergy. The amount received by Reverend Stack from the Society is listed as 50 pounds.
