Samuel Cohen was born in Lambeth, London in 1812 and arrived in Sydney on 19 April 1834 aboard the ship Resource. He settled in Maitland and, in 1836, founded the wholesale firm David Cohen & Co. with his brother David and cousin Lewis Wolfe. In 1841, Samuel moved to Sydney where he became a prominent member of the Jewish community. In 1860, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and served as the member for Morpeth between August and November 1860. He died suddenly on 4 November 1861.
