  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Klaus Friedeberger (1922-2019) was born in Berlin to a secular Jewish family. In 1938, aged 16, he attended the International Quaker school, Eerde, The Netherlands, a boarding school that also served as a refuge for German and Jewish children persecuted by the Nazi regime. In 1939 he obtained permission to move to Britain as a refugee and was interned as an enemy alien by the British Government the same year. He was deported to Australia on board the Dunera in 1940. In Australia he was interned in camps at Hay, Orange then Tatura.

In Tatura he was one of many internees who were offered release from internment in return for agreeing to serve in the 8th Australian Employment Company of the Australian Army. He was discharged on 22 August 1946.

In 1947 Friedeberger enrolled at East Sydney Technical College under the Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme. In 1950, after completing his studies, he sailed to Europe on the proceeds of the Mosman Art Prize, then settled in London. He met New Yorker Julie Klorman in 1960 and they married in 1962. He continued painting and held his first solo exhibition in the Hamilton Galleries in 1963. To support his painting, he worked mainly in advertising and graphic design, and taught at the Central School and London College of Printing. He ceased this work by the early 1980s and continued painting for nearly forty years, with his artworks included in exhibitions and collections in Europe and Australia. Klaus Friedeberger died in London in 2019.
