  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Francis Edwin Birtles (1881-1941) was an Australian adventurer, photographer, cyclist, and filmmaker, who set many long-distance cycling and driving records, including becoming in 1927 the first man to drive a car from England to Australia. Birtles had set a speed record driving from Darwin to Melbourne the previous year. In 1912 he completed the first west-to-east crossing of the continent with Syd Ferguson and a terrier, Rex, in a single-cylinder Brush car.

    Three views of the Blue Mountains, probably taken in April 1912,during Francis Birtle's first crossing of Australia by motor car.
