An ice-cream vendor wearing braces and with rolled-up shirt sleeves stands behind a table with glass jars and bottles. To his right is a sign 'Ice cream / Iced drinks / & Cider', and a boy in a white jacket, who may be an assistant. To the left, a man and woman sit on the ground with their wares in baskets. In the foreground, a man in a suit rests his foot on the base of the Italianate drinking fountain, completed by sculptor Walter McGill in 1865. In the background are the entrance gates to the Botanic Gardens, located at Mrs Macquarie's Road near the Domain, which include carvings of Australian flowers and the date 1873. A building, possibly the Garden Palace, is partly visible in the background.

A photographic print of 2 people standing near a waterfall is pasted on to the reverse of the card sheet
