  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Donald Munro Shand (1904-1976), was a grazier and farmer on a 4000-acre (1619 ha) property, called Woodville, at Puddledock, near Armidale. During World War II Shand had set up the Women's Agricultural Security Production Services groups and with the co-operation of other landholders, he organized mass production of primary products. In 1947 he became founding chairman of East-West Airlines. Backed by local graziers, East-West expanded into aerial agriculture—spreading superphosphate, seeding, and crop dusting. He also trialled the cultivation of hybrid maize seed. In 1976 he was appointed C.M.G. (Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George). He was married twice. First in 1927 to Evelyn Wigan, née Hawkins, formerly Hyde and in 1952 to Beryl Constance Downe, née Coventry.
