  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The Hordern family founded one of Sydney’s biggest retail companies in 1823 which they ran for almost a century. Samuel Hordern (1849-1909) was the second son of merchant and founder Anthony Hordern (1819-1879) and in 1886 became the sole owner of the company. In 1905 a six-storey building called the New Palace Emporium was opened for Hordern & Sons on the site of their Brickfield Hill store located on the corner of George, Pitt, and Goulburn Streets in the CBD.

    A photograph mounted on backing board with 88 small portraits of managers and heads of the departments of Hordern & Sons, including a portrait of Samuel Hordern in the centre, and two female portraits of Miss A. Dobson and Miss L. Clarke. Each portrait has a first initial and surname is provided underneath.
