  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Shirley Hazzard (1931–2016) was an expatriate Australian novelist, short story writer and essayist. She was born in Sydney but left Australia with her family in 1947, moving to Hong Kong, Italy and New Zealand before making a home in New York. In 1980, The Transit of Venus brought her international acclaim and won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her 2003 novel, The Great Fire won the U.S. National Book Award for Fiction, the Miles Franklin Award and the William Dean Howells Medal. In 2010, Hazzard's 1970 novel, The Bay of Noon, was shortlisted for the Lost Man Booker Prize. In 1963 she married Francis Steegmuller (1906-1994). Steegmuller was an American novelist, biographer and translator noted for his work on Gustav Flaubert, and biographies of Jean Cocteau, Isadora Duncan and Guy de Maupassant.
