  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Mark John Hammond (1844-1908) was a gold-miner and politician, born in Sydney. He struck gold at Hill End with his business partners Beyers and Holtermann in 1872, selling his stake soon afterwards. Hammond returned to Sydney in 1873 where he was elected an alderman of Ashfield Municipal Council in 1876, and served as Mayor of Ashfield between 1882-1884. Hammond was then elected to the seat of Canterbury in the NSW Legislative Assembly, which he held from 1884-1887.
