Idris Murphy (1949-) is a contemporary figurative landscape painter born in Sydney, New South Wales. He has completed a Diploma in Painting from the National Art School, 1971, Doctor of Creative Arts from the University of Wollongong, Graduate Diploma (Education) from SCAE, Sydney, and Postgraduate in Painting and Printmaking from Winchester College of Art, United Kingdom, 1977. Murphy has worked as a lecturer at the College of Fine Art, University of New South Wales, 1988-2007, and was instrumental in establishing the printmaking department at the School of Creative Arts, University of Wollongong, 1982. He has had solo exhibitions across Australia and internationally and has been represented by King Street Gallery since 1993. Idris was the State Library of New South Wales' artist-in-residence in 2020.

The Heretic is a play written by Australian author Morris West, based on the life of 16th century Italian friar Giordano Bruno. The 1988 limited and deluxe editions of The Heretic was a collaboration between Idris Murphy and Morris West and initiated by James Taylor, bibliophile and editor of Wayzgoose: the Australian journal of book arts. The Heretic prints were printed at the Atelier Chamfleury, Paris, on stone and plate, with the relief prints printed in Australia. The prints were created using the process of lithography and relief etchings.
