  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    William Mineard Bennett (1778-1858) was a 19th century British portrait painter and miniaturist who trained under noted Regency portraitist Sir Thomas Lawrence. His London address, as cited on verso of the painting, was 58 Frith Street, Soho, London; the cost of the painting in 1819 was £21.

  • Collection history
    By descent through the Kent family, the family of John Hunter’s sister Mary up until the mid 19th century. The portrait’s provenance is unconfirmed after the mid-late 19th century, however it is believed to have remained within the Kent family, prior to the vendor acquiring it through an intermediary.
  • Scope and Content
    A framed miniature portrait of Admiral and Governor John Hunter (1737-1821) in uniform. He was promoted rear admiral on 2 October 1807, and vice-admiral on 31 July 1810.

    'Vice Admiral John Hunter
    Born 7th July 1737 died on London 14th March 1821– aged 84
    84 years - Buried in Hackney [crossed out] Church Yard in the same Tomb
    with his Cousin James Bruce Grant Esquire
    entered the Navy on board the Grampus Sloop 1753
    and was constantly employed ‘till 1807 when [??]
    from Pay Commissioners afloat at Portsmouth in 1807
    This miniature was painted in 1819

    'Served his country 53 years without interruption'

    'This miniature was presented to me by Miss Kent on 20th of October 1850, to be considered for ever as my own Property…' . [Signed] 'W.G.C. Kent'.

    In a later hand 'Admiral [John] Hunter was a Grand Uncle to Capt. W.G.C. Kent, R.N'.
