Ludwig Klein was involved with the opal industry early in the 20th century, and then conducted a gem business in Sydney. First at Adams' Chambers, George Street, then at Somerset House, Moore Street.

He lived at 350 Alison Road, Coogee. Klein was married to Esma Marie, with whom he had three children, Carl, William, and Margaret. He died in 1949 at the age of 84.
