    Peter Loveday was born in Adelaide in 1925. He graduated with a Diploma in Metallurgy from Sydney Technical College, 1947, and BA (Hons), University of Sydney, 1956. He was awarded a PhD in 1963 from the same university for his thesis, The Development of Parliamentary Government in New South Wales, 1856-1870. He was Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Government, University of Sydney, 1959-1965; Reader in Politics at the University of Adelaide, 1966-1967; and Senior Fellow in Political Science at the Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University, 1968-1981. From 1981 until his retirement in 1990, Loveday was Field Director and Executive Director of the North Australia Research Unit in the Northern Territory. Under his direction the NARU undertook an active research and publications program. In 1992 he was appointed a Member of the Order for Australia (AM) for services to education in the Northern Territory.
