The Poets Union was formed in August 1977 in Melbourne, and later incorporated in N.S.W. with branches in Sydney, Wollongong, Melbourne and Adelaide. Its purpose was to encourage and develop opportunities for poets and contemporary poetry in Australia. The union acted as an advocacy and representational body fighting for and protecting the rights of its members. It received support from the Australia Council, the NSW Ministry for the Arts and Sydney City Council.

Prominent Australian writers and publishers associated with the Poets' Union have included Lee Cataldi, Anna Couani, Rae Desmond Jones, Kate Llewellyn, Phil Roberts, Nigel Roberts, Alan Wearne, Judith Wright and Tom Thompson.

In 2011, The Poets Union merged with the Australian Poetry Centre to form Australian Poetry Ltd.
