    The Royal Society of New South Wales is one of the oldest learned societies in the Southern hemisphere. The Society had its origins in the Philosophical Society of Australasia, founded in 1821, and was incorporated in 1881 to 'encourage studies in Science, Art, Literature and Philosophy'. Throughout its history the Society has encouraged local research in all fields of science, through meetings, symposia, publications and international scientific exchange.
