    Dr Estelle Janet Myers (1936 - 2012), born in Hobart, Tasmania was a water birth activist who worked in promotions and film-making. She was widely travelled and involved in many campaigns such as nuclear disarmament and the campaign against captivity of dolphins and whales. During the 1970s she worked in promotions in New York and in 1979 unsuccessfully sought election to the NSW Senate as an independent. She set up the Rainbow Dolphin Centre in Tutukaka, New Zealand and in March 1982 assisted the first underwater birth there. In 1984 she became a New Zealand citizen and nominated unsuccessfully as a New Zealand Party candidate. In 1985 Myers went to Russia & met with Igor Charkovsky, a water birth pioneer and in 1982 and 1986 she presented two ‘Homo Delphinus’ Conferences in Australia. After involvement with the failed Advance Australia Party in 1986 Myers stood as an Australian Democrats candidate for Wentworth in the 1990 Federal election. In 1990 she won the United Nations Media Peace Prize for her documentary Oceania: The Promise of Tomorrow. In 2008 she completed her thesis at Australia's Southern Cross University entitled ‘Midwife to Gaia, birthing global consciousness: a reflective topical autobiography’. Estelle Myers died in a car accident at Suffolk Park in September 2012
