William Lawson (1744-1850), was an explorer and pastoralist, who was one of the first Europeans to find a route across the Blue Mountains, alongside Gregory Blaxland and William Charles Wentworth. Lawson accumulated extensive estates including 1000 acres west of the Blue Mountain ranges, 6000 acres in Mudgee, 25 000 acres on the Talbragar River, 6000 acres near Bathurst, 3000 acres in Roxburgh, 1500 acres near Springwood, and 160 000 acres in various other leases. It was 2 216 acres around Coolah, New South Wales, to which Hallen laid his claim.

William Lawson married Sarah Leadbeater at Norfolk Island in 1812 and had four children. His daughter Sophia married Edward Hallen and had two sons, Samuel and William Hallen. Leslie Hallen is the son of William Hallen.
