    The Australian Institute of Professional Communicators (AIPC) began in 1977 as the Society of Industrial Editors (SIE). In 1982, it changed its name to Society of Business Communicators (SBC) and in 1991 became the AIPC. The Institute was set up to facilitate research and networking in organisational communication. It published a newsletter for its members and hosted the annual Serif awards which recognised achievements in Australian professional communications from 1991 until 2001.
