Dr. Helen Caldicott (b. 1938, Melbourne) is a leading antinuclear activist and physician whose work focuses on the medical and environmental hazards of the nuclear age. In the 1970s, she led campaigns to ban French atmospheric nuclear testing in the South Pacific. She has also worked with Australian trade unions to educate members about the medical dangers of uranium mining.

When living in the United States, Caldicott was instrumental in reviving the Physicians for Social Responsibility organisation as president (1978-1983). She has founded several organisations, including the Women’s Action for Nuclear Disarmament (WAND) in 1980 and the Nuclear Policy Research Institute (NPRI, now: Beyond Nuclear) in 2001. Caldicott is also president of The Helen Caldicott Foundation and the author of seven books.

For her work, Caldicott has received many prizes and awards. She holds 21 honorary doctoral degrees. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985, and named as one of the most influential women in the twentieth century.
