  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) was formed in 1915 when a group of more than 1000 women came together in a Congress of Women to end the war in Europe. The Congress established an International Committee of Women for Permanent Peace, which four years later became known as the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. The organisation continues to operate as an international non-profit organisation that brings women together to oppose conflict, violence and global militarisation.

The WILPF functions at international, national and local levels. The national bodies are referred to as sections; state-based groups are referred to as branches.

The New South Wales Branch of WILPF was founded in 1959 by Margaret Holmes. WILPF Australia now has branches in five states and has campaigned for peace and disarmament, and against the Vietnam War, conscription, the use of nuclear weapons, the Gulf war and the war in Iraq.
